At a glance
- Deltek moved Vision 7.6 to sustaining support in January 2026: no enhancements, hotfixes, or regulatory updates.
- Deltek Cloud customers lose access to their Vision instance during the first quarter of 2027.
- Vantagepoint is a legitimate, lower-risk path, and for many design firms it is the right one.
- Firms that are multi-entity, acquisitive, or doing field work should first decide how projects, people, and finance should work together.
Every Vision firm now has a deadline it didn’t choose. The managing partner, the CFO, and the COO should treat it as a finance and operating decision, and make it once.
For many firms, staying with Deltek is the right answer. The point is to choose it on purpose.
Deltek has set the calendar
Deltek’s upgrade FAQ, updated January 9, 2026, is plain about the dates. Vision 7.6 received a final year-end update in January 2026 and moved to sustaining support.
Deltek defines sustaining support as no new software enhancements, hotfixes, or regulatory updates. For a CFO, the last item matters most. Any tax or regulatory change after January 2026 has to be handled outside the system.
Deltek Cloud customers face a harder stop: access to their Vision instance winds down in the first quarter of 2027. For them, the decision has to be made this budget year.
Vantagepoint is the lower-risk path, and often the right one
Deltek describes Vantagepoint as the next release of Vision, not a reimplementation or a data conversion. Deltek states there is no cost to upgrade. Its Customer Assistance Program gives firms free access to product experts and a template upgrade plan.
User-defined info centers, workflows, and custom reports carry over and stay supported. The modules are very similar to Vision’s, and most of the work moves from the old smart client to a browser.
It is still work. Deltek tells firms to review security roles and to prepare before the upgrade.
Saved favorite reports arrive read-only, and opportunities and projects are combined. A few minor components are being phased out, including Document Management for SharePoint. Budget the time for that review; it is far less than replacing the system.
Staying with Deltek is right for many firms
We tell firms to stay in the Deltek family when their shape is stable. A single-entity design firm under about 100 people is usually best served by Vantagepoint, or by Ajera for smaller practices. The switching cost buys little.
Federal cost-plus contractors on Deltek Costpoint are another case. DCAA judges a contractor’s accounting system, policies, and people, not the software. An incumbent that auditors already know is hard to beat.
And a Deltek Cloud customer with little runway before 2027 may be wise to upgrade now and reopen the question later, when there’s time to do it well.
A firm that is changing shape should decide first
The case for a wider look is strongest when the firm is changing faster than its systems. Four signs point that way. The firm runs several legal entities or currencies, or acquires firms regularly. It delivers field work or managed services alongside projects, or already runs on Microsoft 365, Teams, and Power BI.
Those firms feel the cost of separate systems every month. Rate cards and roles differ by office.
Utilization and margin are rebuilt in spreadsheets from exports. Intercompany staffing means manual invoices between entities.
For them, the move off Vision is the cheapest moment in a decade to decide whether projects, people, and finance should run on one set of numbers.
Answer five questions before you compare products
The software choice follows the operating decisions. Before any demo, the leadership team should answer these in writing.
How many entities and currencies will we run in five years? Consolidation and intercompany needs decide more than any feature list.
Which contract types do we sell? Time and materials, fixed fee, not-to-exceed, retainers, and subscriptions each bill and recognize revenue differently.
Where does field work live? If crews, equipment, or inspections sit next to projects, they belong in the same model.
Who owns staffing, and from what data? A firm that staffs across offices needs one view of skills and bookings.
What must the CFO see weekly? Estimate at completion, unbilled work, and utilization, on one definition, without a side workbook.
A move to Dynamics 365 is a full rebuild
If the answers point beyond Deltek, be clear about what that means. Moving to Microsoft Dynamics 365 Project Operations is a new system, with data conversion, retraining, and a longer runway than the Vantagepoint upgrade.
Project Operations comes in two deployments. Core runs on Dataverse with lightweight project accounting.
The integrated deployment runs on Dynamics 365 Finance, with full project accounting, revenue recognition, and intercompany. Choose early, because the rest of the design follows it.
Some capabilities are new. Revenue recognition on cost estimate reached general availability in September 2026.
Change Order Management and subscription billing for professional services firms are in preview. Plan around what is generally available today.
What firm leaders should do this quarter
Put the Deltek dates in the budget as well as the IT plan. Cloud customers have until the first quarter of 2027.
Answer the five questions before any demo. The operating model decides the software.
Take the Vantagepoint path seriously. If your firm’s shape is stable, it is the lower-cost, lower-risk answer.
Compare alternatives on your own contracts and staffing. Ask every vendor to run your real scenarios, and ask any partner to name where its answer is weaker.
Decide once, with finance and operations in the room. The next system will shape how your firm closes, bills, and staffs for a decade.
